The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range Lyrics

Artist: Roger Waters
Album: Amused To Death

You have a natural tendency
To squeeze off a shot
You're good fun at parties
You wear the right masks
You're old but you still
Like a laugh in the locker room
You can't abide change
You're at home on the range
You opened your suitcase
Behind the old workings
To show off the magnum
You deafened the canyon
A comfort a friend
Only upstaged in the end
By the Uzi machine gun
Does the recoil remind you
Remind you of sex
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next
I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Saw a U.S. Marine in a pile of debris
I swam in your pools
And lay under your palm trees
I looked in the eyes of the Indian
Who lay on the Federal Building steps
And through the range finder over the hill
I saw the front line boys popping their pills
Sick of the mess they find
On their desert stage
And the bravery of being out of range
Yeah the question is vexed
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next
Hey bartender over here
Two more shots
And two more beers
Sir turn up the TV sound
The war has started on the ground
Just love those laser guided bombs
They're really great
For righting wrongs
You hit the target
And win the game
From bars 3,000 miles away
3,000 miles away
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range
We zap and maim
With the bravery of being out of range
We strafe the train
With the bravery of being out of range
We gain terrain
With the bravery of being out of range
With the bravery of being out of range
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range

Brilliant sarcastic lyrics from one of my favourite lyricists.
Taken from a very deep Album that could almost be an entire soundtrack from a film...

Techonological armies and soldiers consider themselves powerful when they do not have to face the madness of suffering because they have tele directed missiles. Good lyrics against war and army governments. I hope millions of people mut listen to it

Roger Waters you are a Legend. The Best.

I wonder how Roger would feel if the Americans didn't come to Europe's rescue during the 2nd World War.
by DapOrp on 1/1/2012 10:55pm
@Kurt, this song is not a commentary on the US Military as a whole, or even specifically the US Military, but rather the evolution of warfare in general. You have to understand that the war fought as WWII is ENTIRELY different than the war(s) being fought in the past 2 decades.

I love his music, but hate his politics. Everybody hates the USA, but come here to make their fortunes. Roger lives in the Hamptons..."I' ve made a few quid..." In "Mother" we learn to not trust the government, but he looks to Obama to fix the our perceived social problems?
by FloydFan on 10/2/2012 1:58pm
Roger doesn't hate the US and he doesn't hate Americans. he also doesn't hate all Govts - these are all simplifications. The song is not a critique of the US only, it's a critique of how sickeningly easy it is to kill 1000s of people from many miles away, and how sickeningly un-caring Govts all over the world are about the pain and suffering warfare causes - not just to those on the end of attacks but also those fighting wars as well - listen to Pink Floyd's final album with Roger at the helm - The Final Cut - and you will see these messages elaborated and his feelings that the common everyday man that is the soldier on the ground is betrayed by un-caring commanders and governments that send them to the slaughter. It's very simplistic to argue that you can't criticise certain actions or regimes because the US saved us all from the Nazis in WW2 - this really has nothing to do with this song.

more self deluded nonsense from a man who has shown himself to be useless without mason, wright and gilmour
by meghead on 3/18/2014 2:29pm
Actually this song is as much a statement about Joe Public as it is about the US (and other) governments. The first half is about the old guard who only know how to get things done by killing people. The second part is about the sickness of "war as a spectator sport" as happened with the original Gulf war (which he's referring to here) and subsequent wars. Live televised long-distance bombing of Iraq via CNN while people watch and chant U-S-A is really what he's sickened about, and rightly so.
